We are an ancient wine-growing region with diverse microclimates and landscapes, and altitudes reaching up to 1,000m. Situated in the south-east of Spain, the Jumilla wine region stretches <\/span>across <\/span>two of Spain\u2019s southern provinces: Castilla-La Mancha, in which 60% of the vines are planted, and Murcia. <\/span>Covering a total of 22,400 hectares (about 55,000 acres), the appellation is similar in size to Ribera del Duero. <\/span><\/p>\n

Steeped in history and tradition, Jumilla vine-growing dates back over 2,500 years, as evidenced by recently discovered archaeological remains. <\/span>Among the discoveries was an item of incalculable value -a pair of 4<\/span>th <\/span>century BC earrings crafted in the shape of grape bunches. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Consejo Regulador DOP Jumilla (Jumilla Wine Council) is the official body that administers the appellation\u2019s rules and regulations, supervises its vine-growers, wineries and cooperatives and helps promote their wines. All the wineries registered in the Jumilla appellation must meet the strict conditions set out by the body, while the wines produced must fulfil stringent criteria of origin and quality in order to carry the DOP Jumilla label on their bottle. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin has nearly 20,000 hectares<\/strong> registered and distributed among the municipalities of Jumilla, Fuente-\u00c1lamo, and Montealegre del Castillo<\/strong>. Tobarra, Hell\u00edn, Ontur and Albatana. It brings together 1,400 winegrowers<\/strong> and has 39 certified wineries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The distribution of the vineyard area registered in the DOP Jumilla in 2021 is detailed below, showing the various municipalities it encompasses and totalling approximately 22,500<\/strong> hectares of vines. <\/span><\/p>\n

40%<\/strong> is located within the municipal boundaries of Jumilla, while the remaining 60%<\/strong> is spread across various municipalities within the province of Albacete. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Practising\u00a0organic<\/span>\u00a0vine-growing is almost second nature to Jumilla growers. As one of the driest wine regions in Spain (less than 300mm a year), Jumilla is largely spared the fungal diseases that threaten the vines in many rainier appellations. Spray treatments are seldom necessary if at all, and eco-friendly practices are widespread.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

The general move towards pesticide and herbicide use introduced a generation ago never really got off the ground in Jumilla, since its growers could manage perfectly well with their traditional time-honoured methods. By the time the use of chemicals had been discouraged, it seemed unnecessary for Jumilla producers to suddenly promote their wines as\u00a0organic<\/span>, since that was what they\u2019d always been.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

Today, in order to send a clear message to consumers of their wines, a large proportion of Jumilla wineries have gained\u00a0organic<\/span>\u00a0certification<\/strong> for their products and advertise this on their labels. Currently, over half of the wines produced in Jumilla have\u00a0organic<\/span>\u00a0certification, while 80% of its wineries sell at least a proportion of\u00a0organically<\/span>-certified wines. A growing number of wineries only sell\u00a0organically<\/span>-certified wines. In 2018, some 10 million bottles of these wines (a third of the total production) were produced in the Jumilla appellation.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n

These figures however don\u2019t totally reflect the extent of\u00a0organic<\/span>\u00a0production in the region, since many growers practise\u00a0organic<\/span>\u00a0viticulture without ever having applied for certification. It is estimated that 75% of the Jumilla appellation practises\u00a0organic<\/span>\u00a0growing<\/strong>, and this figure reaches 100% in the municipality of Jumilla<\/strong>, in Murcia province.<\/u><\/u><\/p>\n
