BLIND TASTING OF THE APPELLATION\u2019s wines will be held on 23rd\u00a0and 24th\u00a0May <\/em><em>in the Jumilla Wine Museum. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The winning entries will receive their awards on 24<span style=\"font-size: 11.6667px;\">th<\/span>\u00a0may<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This year marks the <strong>30th edition of the Jumilla Wine Challenge<\/strong>, and for the occasion the Jumilla DOP has chosen to dedicate the event to the town of Jumilla, which each year warmly welcomes to the town the Wine Challenge\u2019s numerous expert wine tasters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 2024 program of activities will showcase the many hidden treasures to be found in Jumilla, a town which has been a crossroads since ancient times, linking the regions of Castilla-La Mancha and Murcia.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion will be coordinated by TV gourmet and wine lover<strong> Enrique Calduch<\/strong>, who has overseen the organization of the event\u2019s tastings throughout these last 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Over the two days of tastings, an 18-strong panel will assess and judge each entry.<\/p>\n<p>The panel will be made up of the following renowned professionals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Andr\u00e9s Proensa<\/strong>, director of Planeta Vino magazine and the Proensa wine guide<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jos\u00e9 Luis Casado,<\/strong> head wine taster for Sobremesa magazine<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jaime Berm\u00fadez<\/strong>, director of Vinoselecci\u00f3n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mara S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, freelance writer for different publications<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antonio Candelas,<\/strong> director of MiVino<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ra\u00fal Serrano<\/strong>, head wine taster for Vivir el Vino magazine and the Vivir el Vino guide<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laura S\u00e1nchez Lara<\/strong>, freelance writer for different publications<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adolfo Fern\u00e1ndez,<\/strong> wine buyer at Bodeboca<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custodio Zamarra<\/strong>, sommelier and wine educator<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rub\u00e9n Palomares<\/strong>, wine buyer at Makro,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miguel \u00c1ngel Mart\u00edn<\/strong>, wine educator at Enocata Valencia and freelance writer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nacho Fern\u00e1ndez,<\/strong> wine buyer at Dec\u00e1ntalo<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gerardo Herb\u00e1s<\/strong> from distributors Mibil (Madrid)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jes\u00fas Flores<\/strong>, director of Aula Espa\u00f1ola del Vino<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00c1lvaro de Miguel,<\/strong> vice-president of the Castilla-La Mancha Association of Sommeliers and president of the Albacete Association of Sommeliers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Juan Enrique Gil<\/strong> (Restaurante Don Gil, Albacete), Certified Court Master Sommelier of Europe and Best Sommelier of Castilla-La Mancha 2024 and 2023<\/li>\n<li><strong>Carlos Nicol\u00e1s<\/strong> (Restaurante El Churra, Murcia), president of the Murcia Association of Sommeliers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Luc\u00eda Marcilla,<\/strong> (Restaurante Arzak, San Sebasti\u00e1n), wine promotor and ex-scholarship holder at the DOP Jumilla wine council.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each member of the Jumilla Wine Challenge panel will taste the wines blind.<\/p>\n<p>The different awards categories are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Whites<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ros\u00e9s<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Unoaked reds<\/strong> (vintages 2023 and 2022)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oaked reds<\/strong> (vintages 2021 and older)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva reds<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sweet wines<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Within the unoaked and oaked reds category, there will be two additional prizes awarded to the highest-scored wines containing at least 85% <strong>Monastrell<\/strong>. \u00a0An award will also be made to the highest-scoring <strong>organic wine<\/strong> from among all the wines tasted at the Challenge.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Poster for the 30th Jumilla Wine Challenge<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A poster for this 30<sup>th<\/sup> edition has been created by Jumilla graphic designer <strong>\u00c1ngela Flores<\/strong> of the \u201cBootik\u201d agency in Murcia. The work pays homage to Enrique Calduch, the Challenge\u2019s driving force since its inception, and to some of its leading tasters, such as Andr\u00e9s Proensa, Jos\u00e9 Luis Casado, Jaime Berm\u00fadez, Mara S\u00e1nchez, Custodio Zamarra and Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Huertas, all of whom feature on the poster taking part in the different phases of the blind tasting. From its inception it was acknowledged by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture as a showcase for the quality of the appellation\u2019s wines.<\/p>\n<p>With the vast majority of the Jumilla DOP\u2019s wineries taking part, the event offers a broad view of the wines produced in the region. Over two days of blind tastings, more than 150 samples will be tasted and judged by a panel of expert tasters whose professions require them to assess the quality of wines and make recommendations to consumers on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the Jumilla Wine Challenge is to reward high quality, highlight the qualities of Monastrell (the region\u2019s star grape) and draw attention to organic farming, which is practiced by the majority of Jumilla\u2019s growers. Special prizes will thus be awarded: one of them to <strong>\u201cBest Organic Wine\u201d<\/strong> and another two to <strong>\u201cBest Monastrell Wines\u201d<\/strong> \u2013one in the unoaked category and the other in the oaked category.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>About the Jumilla DOP and its old vines.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Vine-growing in Jumilla has a long history.
