But those days are long gone. The 12m-long vine, suspended from the roof of her Vi\u00f1a Elena winery as an exhibit, is of course the native Monastrell, a grape variety that today covers almost three-quarters of the Jumilla vineyard.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3954\" src=\"https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Jumilla-920x609-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"920\" height=\"609\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Jumilla-920x609-1.jpg 920w, https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Jumilla-920x609-1-480x318.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 920px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Monastrell\u2019s long vine roots are one reason why Jumilla\u2019s growers revere it. They\u2019re able to delve down into the region\u2019s rocky, limestone soils to extract all the moisture the plant needs, even during Jumilla\u2019s long, baking summers. This is no recent discovery: generations ago, farmers here devoted what water they had to their olive groves and almond trees, knowing that their vines could manage without.
