Andrew Black introduces the rising stars who are pioneering the region\u2019s next generation reds and recommends bottles to try<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jumilla always made decent red wines. Decades ago Jumilla\u2019s wines provided colour, fruit and body to boost blends produced in other more famous wine regions. The ambition of today\u2019s generation of vignerons however is not so much to make decent, marketable products but to achieve wines of international acclaim.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on an indigenous grape, Monastrell, that is perfectly adapted to Jumilla\u2019s sunny, dry climate and poor limestone soils, a growing number of passionate growers are confident that they\u2019re on the right track.<\/p>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-42a0c24d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"42a0c24d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;ekit_we_effect_on&quot;:&quot;none&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3977\" src=\"https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Jumilla-vineyards-1024x677-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Jumilla-vineyards-1024x677-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Jumilla-vineyards-1024x677-1-980x648.jpg 980w, https:\/\/jumilla.wine\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Jumilla-vineyards-1024x677-1-480x317.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, grape-producers took advantage of the region\u2019s generous sunshine by planting vines on south-facing slopes, thereby guaranteeing regular crops of fully ripe grapes. Today, the prime vineyard sites are on the region\u2019s north-facing slopes, where the heat of the sun is gentler and terroir expression comes through in the wines.<\/p>\n<p>This strategy is not risk-free, since Jumilla\u2019s altitude and continental climatic influences make it prone to spring frosts and lower sugar levels in the grapes.
