Today, the indigenous grape is known as the Queen of Jumilla, capable of producing single-varietal wines of great finesse and complexity\u2014but it wasn\u2019t always this way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6872788a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6872788a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;ekit_we_effect_on&quot;:&quot;none&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"post-header__intro\">\n<p>Like the true royal it is, Monastrell requires a bit of, shall we say, attention prior to being presented to the public. Its berries are tiny, sweet, and thick-skinned (in defense against the region\u2019s intense sunlight and limited rainfall); it flowers and ripens later than other varieties; it\u2019s prone to fungal diseases like powdery mildew; and without proper care and constant pruning, these vines can become too vigorous, resulting in the overproduction of poor-quality fruit.
