IN MAY, JUMILLA PDO REGULATORY COUNCIL WILL WELCOME A NEW GROUP OF

“JUMILLA PDO CERTIFIED EDUCATORS”

The Regulatory Council of the Protected Designation of Origin Jumilla reaffirms its commitment to WSET Global, the world’s leading and most popular network of academies for wine experts, by offering the second edition of the PDO Jumilla Wine Educator Course.

This year, the immersive experience will take place on May 20th, 21st, and 22nd, and is expected to welcome a group of 19 educators from around the world, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Sweden, Singapore, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

Following a successful first edition, which saw a surge in collaborations between international professionals and the Jumilla PDO is gaining ground in wine academies and schools worldwide, as well as in educational tastings at all levels. Jumilla PDO wines are positioning themselves as fresh, characterful, and balanced Mediterranean wines, reflecting the revolution taking place in the region’s wineries, and have become essential accompaniments to lunches and dinners.

The objective of this initiative by the Jumilla PDO Regulatory Board is to increase the theoretical content about the Jumilla PDO in wine books and other materials worldwide, as well as in practical educational tastings, thereby securing its rightful place as the most outstanding designation of origin in southeastern and central Spain. Its high-quality wines and unique identity make it one of the best options for consumers, a fact that should be showcased by these academy professors and shared with students.

The people trained at these academies are highly qualified and come from a diverse range of sectors; most are sommeliers, distributors, and those involved in wine tasting and recommendation – key segments for promoting Jumilla PDO wines.

PDO Jumilla Wine Educator Course

This intensive course includes:

      • Visits to wineries and vineyards
      • Offers a workshop on pairings with the Monastrell grape, the queen of the Jumilla PDO, which boasts 25% of the world’s total area planted with this variety.
      • The course includes a soil study of traditional dry-farmed Monastrell vineyards in the Jumilla PDO.
      • The  two top students in the course receive an award.

At the end of their stay, students must demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the region to receive their official diploma as a “PDO Jumilla Wine Educator”.

"Height, Heritage, and Heat: Exploring the Wines of Jumilla”

On March 26, Carolina Martínez Origone, Managing Secretary of the Jumilla PDO Regulatory Board, offered an online seminar in English for the prestigious WSET Global organization, entitled “Height, Heritage, and Heat.”

In it, she revealed key aspects of this wine region, the Monastrell grape, its high-altitude vineyards, and the limestone soils that impart a very distinctive character to its wines.

The Jumilla PDO boasts a unique terroir, with diverse microclimates and spectacular landscapes, and a traditional, organic viticulture that respects the environment and landscape.

About the Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin

Historical references to vine cultivation in the area date back over 5,000 years.

A supra-regional Designation of Origin spanning two Autonomous Communities: Castilla-La Mancha and the Region of Murcia.

Our vineyards benefit from the art of organic farming — a practice we learned to develop more than 2,000 years ago.

The Jumilla Protected Designation of Origin boasts a winemaking tradition dating back to the remains of Vitis vinifera – along with tools and archaeological remains – found in Jumilla dating from 3000 BC, the oldest in Europe.

The production area, at altitudes ranging from 320 to 980 meters and traversed by mountain ranges reaching up to 1,380 meters, is bordered on one side by the southeasternmost part of the province of Albacete, including the municipalities of Hellín, Montealegre del Castillo, Fuente Álamo, Ontur, Albatana, and Tobarra; and on the other by the northern part of the province of Murcia, with the municipality of Jumilla.

It comprises more than 20,000 hectares of vineyards, mostly dry-farmed and trained in the traditional bush vine system, located on predominantly limestone soils.
